Thank
you for reading the first chapter of the Werewolf
of Portland. I hope you are enjoying the story and want to read more
because this is just the beginning. In this chapter you learned about the
origin of the werewolf curse. In the coming chapters you will learn about how
the curse follows Rev. Powers and transmits itself into the next generation.
Chapter
two begins in 1890s Sellwood where we meet Homer Galvez. Homer, a union
activist, is forced to rebuild his life after a traumatic injury. He does so
with the help of his Aunt Judith, the heir to a small fortune, and her adopted
teenage daughter, Josephine. Their lives take an unexpected, and horrifying,
turn after a springtime visit from Rev. Powers and his traveling Salvation
Show.
After
the birth of Bert Smith, a boy who embodies the werewolf curse, Homer is torn
between his love for and loyalty to his family on one side and his
responsibility to society and civilization on the other. Bert, who grows up to
be the werewolf of Portland, finds that the complicated problems of life and
love in the city are astronomically compounded for those who suffer from
lycanthropy. Homer finds that the conflict that strongly pulls him in opposing
directions is not easily resolved.
Over
the next few months this frightful tale will continue to appear in serial form,
with Caitlyn McMorris’ beautiful illustrations. I would love to continue
offering these episodes at no cost to my loyal readers, but the realities of
publishing force me to release these chapters for subscribers only. I hope you
will join me on this voyage into the unknown where we will encounter both
horror and history. Subscribe now. Don’t miss an episode.
